Forms & Information

A series of courses for adults who wish to develop a solid technique in one or more media of their choice. These courses are held in our art studios, located in the lower level of the Dollard des Ormeaux Cultural Center. Please note that the GST (5%) and the PST (9.5%) are added to fees for students 15 years and older. All prices indicated for adult courses include the taxes.

ABOUT OUR ADULT CLASSES


These adult courses are designed by our teachers to develop the highest level of artistic competence in our students. Individual courses can be taken multiple times because the content changes and students are encouraged to broaden their skills by also taking courses in different but interdependent techniques. Classes will include demonstrations, presentations and explanations of various lengths,
on both technical and aesthetic subjects. To maximize the learning in our classes, students who wish to progress more quickly will be asked to follow up class exercises with home practice.

THE EDUCATION IN THE VISUAL ARTS PROGRAM


This is a program aimed at art students, art makers and art lovers who wish to take their artmaking skills and their understanding of art beyond the leisure level. Students in the EVA program will register for a minimum of three art classes per year offered by the Dollard Centre for the Arts, scattered at their convenience through the year. The extra fee per course will allow the student to
have a one-hour, one-on-one discussion with the teacher about their own work, an end-of session group critique with the Director/Curator of Galerie de la Ville and other program students, and free attendance at one Galerie de la Ville event per session

Discover your inner artist! This course is ideal for those interested in exploring their personal expression through drawing. Students will be introduced to various drawing mediums such as graphite pencils, charcoal and ink while exploring both traditional and expressive rendering techniques. Subjects will include still life objects, portraiture and the figure. A strong emphasis will be put on understanding light and shadow. Two classes involve the model.

IMPASTO PAINTING AND COLLAGE TECHNIQUES

Tired of the same old flat surfaces and techniques? Looking for some way to inject new life and creativity into your work? This course will make you think about your paintings in an entirely different way! Using a contemporary approach, collage techniques and found objects, students will literally move the surface of their paintings in new directions. Discussions and demonstrations will provide participants with the fuel to move their creativity to the next level.

THE POWER OF COLOUR IN PASTEL

Are you in love with colour? This course is the ideal next step for someone who has some knowledge of basic drawing techniques and who loves using colour creatively. COMPUTER ANIMATION

Dive head first into the wonderful world of 3D modeling and animation. Students will learn how to use Autodesk's Softimage professional program for creating digital models which they will color and animate. Discover how to do basic manipulation within the 3D environment, to create a model, add coloring, animating and finally generating a video file of the animation. This course is a unique opportunity to get acquainted with the fundamentals of 3D computer animation and discover why it is so popular in the movie and game industry. Materials included.

UNDERSTANDING CONTEMPORARY

REALISTIC DRAWING TECHNIQUES

This course is designed for beginner, intermediate, and advanced students with a desire to gain a more comprehensive appreciation of various approaches to realistic drawing. While always working directly from observation, we will cover in depth concepts that help us to see and draw accurately. Plaster casts of ancient Greek and Renaissance sculptures will be employed as drawing aides as well as other props to help better understand form. Graphite and charcoal will be our two principle mediums. Three
classes involve the model.

COLOUR STUDIES IN OIL

This course is designed for the student desiring a more advanced understanding of colour and its properties. Concepts to be introduced include colour temperature, glazing, scumbling, texture,
mediums, alla prima etc. All painting will be done from direct observation in order to gain the greatest appreciation for form. We will begin by working from simple objects such as fruits while gradually working towards more complex subjects such as human skin. 1 model.

OIL PAINTING TECHNIQUES (INTRODUCTION)

This course starts with the technical aspects of oil painting including how to buy and maintain oil painting equipment, the correct set-up procedures (such as how to make your own painting mediums and varnishes), and colour mixing theory and techniques. In the following classes, students will experiment with the ways that light (value), colour, shape and texture affect the composition and feeling of their paintings, and learn the proper way to layer oil to achieve different effects and permanent results. Subject matter will involve both realistic and non­representational elements. The teacher will demonstrate how design elements (pictorial language) are common to every style of art work. Students will be encouraged to research the painting methods of many different painters.

USING LIGHT TO CREATE DRAMA IN YOUR OIL PAINTINGS   (PART 2)

In this course we will look at the way light can be used to make simpler, more dramatic images. After viewing examples by famous artists, students will be taught how to prepare small sketches in pencil to plan light in their oil paintings. Then small monochromatic paintings ( Renaissance underpainting method) will be made from these sketches. Students will be taught how to organize images with one subject that will be based on the work of a famous artist of his/her choice. The emphasis will be on
learning to use the negative space (background) to create a feeling of drama around the subject.

INTRODUCTION TO OIL PAINTING

INTERMEDIATE OIL PAINTING: BEYOND THE BASICS

As a follow-up to Intro to Oil Painting, this course further explores painting concerns: selection of subject, choosing and mixing colour, composition and finishing a work. SCULPTURE IN CLAY

Thursday 7 to 10 p.m.

Working from the model during five of the ten classes, students will plan and create an interpretative, figurative clay sculpture. Hand-building and sculpting techniques, concepts of sculptural design and human anatomy are among the subjects covered as the work progresses. Demonstrations and group discussions are integral to the class. Finished works will be kiln fired to bisque and various surfacing options will be discussed. 1 bag of clay included. An extra bag is $15.00.

This unusual course is actually two courses taught in tandem and is intended for students with some drawing and/or painting experience. Not included: materials (approx. $200.00.)

Drawing: this half of the course focuses on drawing from the nude model in dry media. Students will learn how to render the human body through shape, form, and perspective; and how to control their media (graphite and charcoal) in realistic and expressive styles.

Painting: In the second half of the course the drawings students produce from the model will serve as the basis for abstraction in acrylics or water-based media.

THE ART OF PHOTOGRAPHY

This course is designed for everyone who wants to learn how to take a good photograph. You will be introduced to the art of photography while learning how to use your camera better. Students must have their own 35 mm or SLR digital camera with manual option and can either use black and white or colour film. (Not for automatic cameras). No darkroom work is involved.

THE AESTHETICS OF PHOTOGRAPHY  (LEVEL 2)

(Depending on the weather, several classes may be off site shoots - to be determined.)

For experienced students and/or amateur photographers. This course is a continuation of The Art of Photography and will provide constructive criticism and objective reviews on any photograph produced during the 10 weeks. The course is dedicated to visually challenge and advance each student’s ability to compose a strong photograph.

From now, until the first day of the course (as long as there is still space), register online (www.dollardartcentre.com) or at the Recreation Department from 8 a.m. to 12 noon and from 1:15 to 4 p.m., Monday to Friday or drop your form and attached cheque in the mail slot of the Dollard Centre for the Arts Office downstairs (Room E008). You can also mail your registration form and cheque to the Dollard Centre for the Arts at 12001 De Salaberry Boulevard, D.D.O., QC, H9B 2A7 or fax your form with your Visa or Mastercard credit card number to 514-684-8885. Dollard residents registering with the Dollard Centre for the Arts for the first time must include proof of residency (driver’s licence, Hydro bill). The Dollard Centre for the Arts reserves the right to cancel any course for which there is insufficient registration; in such a case, a full refund will be given. A $20.00 cancellation fee per student, per course and/or a charge for each class attended will be deducted from any emergency cancellation. No refund will be given after the first class. There will be a fee of $20.00 for any cheque returned by the bank. We reserve the right to postpone classes due to unforeseen circumstances. If you are registering more than one person, please make a copy of the registration form and send one form per person. Please note that when there are three members of the same immediate family residing at the same address registering in the same session, there is a 20% discount on the third, least expensive course.

The Dollard Centre for the Arts reserves the right to photograph classes, artwork and/or performances to publicize these programs.
